Play For Me

Act One  Scene One

Int. Doctor's office.

A girl by the name of  Butterfly is sitting in the waiting room, with her knees shaking.

Nurse

Butterfly Star?

Butterfly stands up.

Nurse

Come with me, please?

A nurse takes her weight, height, and blood pressure.

Nurse

The doctor will be in shortly.

Doctor Meana

Hello, Butterfly.  What a beautiful name.  What are you for today?

Butterfly

I haven't been feeling well.

Doctor Meana

Dizziness?

Butterfly

Some

Doctor Meana

Headaches?

Butterfly

Almost every day

Doctor examines her

Doctor Meana

Here's what I'd like to do; I want you to come back next for lab tests, and then we'll discuss the results at your next appointment.

Int. Home

Mother Marsha  stands at the door, waiting for her.

Butterfly

I don't want to talk about the appointment, Mother.  (Runs to her room)

Mother

Butterfly! Time to eat

Butterfly and Mother sit down at the dinner table.

Mother

So you're not going to tell me how to appointment went?

Butterfly

You would know if you went with me!

Mother sighs

Mother

You do need to learn to do things on your own, Butterfly.

Butterfly

Do you think it's that simple?

Mother

Yes,

Butterfly

Well, it's not.

Mother rolls her eyes.

Butterfly

May I be excused?

Mother

No, you may not.  You're going to sit down at this table, and we're going to eat the table like we're family.

Butterfly

But, Mom!

Mother

Enough.

Butterfly

(Mumbles)

Mother

What was that?

Butterfly

I said we have not been a family since you and Dad split, and that's your fault! (Runs to her room, crying)

Int.  Outside

A man Vaino  (Pronounced Vine) is playing the guitar and singing.

Vaino

(singing)

What did I expect?

They're not happy I suspect.

They push me away

So I never stay

But what did I expect?

They're not happy I suspect?

Wouldn't be nice?

If their hearts weren't made ice?

They break my heart

We're so far apart

But what I did expect

They're not happy I suspect!

Butterfly claps her hands tips the man.

Vaino

Oh, I didn't know anyone was watching!

Butterfly smiles

Butterfly

You were brilliant! Do you come here often to play?

Vaino

Lately.  Yeah.  What is your name?

Butterfly

Butterfly

Vaino

A beautiful name for a beautiful girl. Will I see you again?

Butterfly

You might. I should go! Wait, what s your name?

Vaino

Vaino. Pronounced Vine.

Butterfly

Vaino

Vaino kisses Butterfly's hand.

Act One Scene Two

Int. Butterfly's home at the breakfast table

Butterfly hums to herself

Mother

You're in a good mood today.  What's with the sudden change of attitude?

Butterfly smiles

Butterfly

Oh, no reason.

Mother

Wait. Is this about some boy?! Because it better not be.

Butterfly laughs

Mother

That's a sound I haven't heard in so long.

Butterfly

Don't get used to it!

Mother sighs

Mother

I want you to be happy, Butterfly.

Butterfly

I know, Mom.

Mother

Are you coming home tonight?

Butterfly

No, I'm sleeping over at Anna's tonight.

Mother

On a school night?

Butterfly

I'm not a little kid anymore, Mother.  I'll be home in the afternoon.  Going to pack up all my stuff for school and take it over, so don't worry.

Mother

I guess I can't stop you. Have fun.  Be careful! No drinking! No boys!

Anna

Your mother didn't give you a hard time, did she?

Butterfly

Oh, she did, but it's okay.  What's on the agenda tonight?

Anna

We're planning on sneaking into a bar!

Butterfly

But we're not twenty-one yet!  I'm not comfortable with this, Anna,

Anna

Boy, you never want to have any fun, do you?

Butterfly

I do, but you always force me into things I'm uncomfortable with,

Anna rolls her eyes

Butterfly

And that's another thing! I try to talk to you about how I feel, and you don't want to hear it, but when I don't, you get upset because I'm not being honest with you!

Anna

Whatever! If you don't like it or are uncomfortable around me.  I guess you could go home then,

Butterfly

I guess then maybe I will!

Anna

What? Butterfly? No, I didn't mean it!

Butterfly

It seems clear that you did mean it, Anna! Goodbye.

Anna

Butterfly! Butterfly!

Butterfly

Oh, and more thing?  When we're at school tomorrow, don't come up to me.  Don't even wave at me. We're no longer friends.

Anna

You can't do this!

Butterfly

I can. I did, and I will.   (Exits through the window)

Mother

Butterfly! What's wrong?  What happened?

Butterfly

It's nothing, Mother.  An argument with Anna is all.

Mother

Do you want to talk about it?

Butterfly

No, Mother. I'm fine.  I'm going out.

Mother

But you just got back!

Butterfly

Sorry, I  need to clear my head, and walking helps me do that.

Butterfly slams the door shut before Mother could reply

Vaino

Well, well.  If it isn't the beautiful butterfly I met a few days ago.

Butterfly blushes

Butterfly

Vaino, was it?

Vaino

Indeed

Awkward silence

Vaino

Would you like to have a cup of coffee with me?  I know it's a little soon, but you seem like someone's company I could enjoy.

Butterfly blushes again.

Butterfly

I'd love to.  Let's go

They walk into the coffee shop, and Vaino pays for it.

Vaino

I'm sorry if I'm prying, but is everything alright?  It seems like in deep thought? Do you want to talk about it?  Sometimes it's easier to tell a stranger, right?

Act One Scene Three

Int. Doctor's office

Nurse

Hello,  Butterfly.  How are you doing today?

Butterfly

I'm okay.  How are you?

Nurse

Fine. Thank you for asking.

(Nurse does the lab work)

Int.

Mother

Oh, good.  You're home.  We're having people over for dinner tonight!

Butterfly

What? How come you didn't tell me?

Mother

Because I knew you'd act like that.

Butterfly

Like what?

Mother

You're going to have to get used to people at some point, Butterfly.   It's unhealthy to be alone all the time as you are.

Butterfly

I'm not alone.  I have Anna- Yeah, you're right.

Mother raises her eyebrow.

Mother

Everything alright? Is there something you want to talk to me about?

Butterfly

No, nothing, Mother.

Mother

Alright.  I'll call you when dinner is ready.   (Butterfly exits)

Mother

What am I going to do about that girl?

Act Two Scene One

Doctor

Thanks for coming back in so soon.  How are you feeling? Are your symptoms getting better or worse?

Butterfly

They seem to be getting better.

Doctor

You're sick.  You have a deadly disease.  Now, you can do the treatment.  It's up to you or not, but this is something that needs to be taken seriously.

Butterfly

Can I have time to decide what I want to do?

Doctor

Of course, and you may want to speak to your mom.  The next few weeks are going to be rough. So you're going to want to have someone around to help you as you grow weaker.

Butterfly sits down and cries.

Vaino

Butterfly?  What's wrong?

Butterfly

I don't want to talk about it.

Vaino

Okay.  What can I do for you?

Butterfly

Will you play for me?

Vaino

Girl, why are you so sad?

Is it that bad?

Do you have a broken heart?

Please don't fall apart.

Girl, why are you so sad?

Is that bad?

Butterfly

You are so talented.

Vaino

That's very kind of you to say, but are you okay? I'm worried about you.

Butterfly

I'm fine, but I should get home.  My mother is greeting company for dinner tonight.

Int. Butterfly's home, getting ready for dinner.

Mother

My goodness! Butterfly, you look beautiful.

Butterfly

Thanks, Mom.

People knock on the door, and Mother answers it.

Butterfly is shocked to see Vaino.

Butterfly

Vaino!?

Mother

Wait, you two know each other?

Vaino

Yes, we met a few weeks ago.  Hello, Butterfly.   Butterfly, Marsha, this my sister Liisa.   Liisa, this is Butterfly, and her mother, Marsha.

Liisa

Hello.  Hello, nice to meet you.

Vaino

Excuse me, sister. She's a little shy.

Butterfly

Liisa, would you like to take a tour around the house?

Liisa nods

Liisa picks up paintings and stares at them.

Butterfly

I paint when I'm sad.  What do you do when you're sad, Liisa?

Liisa shrugs

Mother Marsha

Butterfly! Liisa dinner is ready!

Butterfly puts her arm around Liisa

Act Two Scene Two

Int.

After dinner, Butterfly invited Liisa back to her room.

Butterfly

May I ask you a question

Liisa nods

Butterfly

Why don't you talk? Are you scared of talking?

Liisa shrugs

Butterfly

Can you write?

Liisa nods and smiles

Butterfly hands Liisa an empty journal

Butterfly

Here, this is your journal. I know you can talk because you've spoken to us.  Now, the journal is yours to keep.

Liisa hands it back

Butterfly

Don't you like it?

Liisa writes: I can't take this.  It's not right.

Butterfly

It is right.  You'll take that journal back with you, and you'll use it to talk and or even write poetry or stories.

Liisa writes again:  You're bossy.

Butterfly snickers

Butterfly

So I've been told a time or two.  But Bossy girls are sometimes hot and irresistible to guys.  (Butterfly winks)

Liisa giggles

Mother Marsha and Butterfly walk Liisa and Vaino out.

Butterfly

It was so nice to meet you, Liisa! And thanks for coming tonight, Vaino.

Vaino kisses Butterfly on the cheek, and Butterfly blushes.

Butterfly

Not in front of my mother!

Mother Marsha

No need to be embarrassed.  It looks like a boy is finally interested in you.  Does this mean I'll get grandkids one day?

Butterfly

Mother!

(Mother closes the door behind Liisa and Vaino)

Mother

In all seriousness, I'm very proud of you, Butterfly.

Butterfly

You- you are?

Mother

You seemed comfortable tonight. Liisa has taken a liking to you, too.

Butterfly sits down and sobs.

Mother

Butterfly, what is it? What's wrong?

Butterfly

Oh, Mama.  I went back to the doctor.  I'm sick, Mama. I'm so scared.

Butterfly collapses in Mother Marsha's arms)

Vaino

It seems Butterfly likes you.  Do you like her, too?

Liisa writes:  Yes, I like her very much, but she's hiding something?

Vaino

You think so, too, huh?

Act Two Scene Three

Int.  Vaino's home.  Butterfly is laying her head on his lap.

Butterfly

This is nice. It's nice and peaceful.  I'm going to close my eyes, okay? Vaino?

Vaino

Yes?

Butterfly

Will you play for me?

Vaino

Of course, I will.

Butterfly

Vaino?

Vaino

Yes, my love?

Butterfly

I love you. I don't know when or how. I know we fell for each other quickly, but I love you.  I know my time is running out, though.

Vaino

Let's not talk about this, Butterfly.

Butterfly

But, we do need to talk about it.  I know it makes you uncomfortable, but this is my reality, Vaino.  Why can't you accept that?

Vaino

I don't want to accept that! I don't want to accept that there may not be a future with us.  Why? Why must you push me to grieve you before you're gone?  What if you beat this thing?  You'll have your whole life ahead of you!

Butterfly

We don't live in a magical world, Vaino! I know you want to believe we do, but we don't. People are cruel and kind, but not everything is happy to go lucky all the time. Anyway, I should go.

Vaino grabs her hand, gently spends her around to face him.

Crazy about you

It's true

There you were like a dove.

And I fell in love

Vaino

Liisa, what are you doing here?

Liisa hands Vaino a note

Vaino

Does Mom want to meet with us? Now?

Liisa nods

Butterfly

I guess that's my cue to head home.

Vaino

Wait. Don't leave. Come with us.  Meet our mother. Besides, Liisa and I would feel much better having you there, wouldn't you?

Liisa eagerly nods

Butterfly laughs

Butterfly

Oh, alright. I'll go.  You two are something else.

Liisa grins

Butterfly

I want to make a good impression, though.  So what should I wear?

Liisa drags Butterfly away while Vaino laughs.

Liisa points to a dress.

Butterfly

Are you sure mom will approve?

Liisa nods

Butterfly

Alright. If you say so then, I trust you.  Hey, Liisa.  Vaino was telling me you like air hockey.  Why don't we play this weekend?

Liisa's eyes light up, and she nods.

Vaino

Time to go! Our mother doesn't like for us to be late.  Isn't that right, Liisa? (Liisa nods and runs out to the car)

Butterfly

Hello, Ma; am.  I'm Butterfly.

Butterfly holds out her hand, But Anna doesn't take it.

Anna

Butterfly is a stupid name.  Where your parents on something?

Vaino

Mother!

Butterfly

I quite like my name.  Thank you very much.

Anna

Let's make something very clear here, Butterfly.  I've only met you, and I already don't like you.  If you think being polite or standing up to me will work in your favor, I can assure you, it will not.

Butterfly

Fine.  You don't have to like me.   Now it's my turn to make something clear. I love Vaino, and if you think intimating me by your rudeness will send me running, it will not.

Anna

Humph

Vaino

That is over.  Hello, Mother. How have you been?

Anna

I've been so lonely since your father passed away.  You and Liisa don't come to visit me much anymore, but it's okay.  I understand.   I may not have many days left.

Butterfly

Are you sick?

Anna

No, but I am getting up there in age.

Butterfly

You look perfectly healthy to me.

Anna

What would you know?

Butterfly

What would I know?  You see, I would know about being sick because unlike you, I am sick! Don't use your future illnesses or death to guilt-trip your children.  No wonder they are uncomfortable around you.

Act Two Scene Three

Weeks later and Butterfly has gotten sicker.

Mother Marsha

Butterfly? Hone?  I brought you some food-  Butterfly! Wake up!

Mother Marsha tries to shake her awake.

Mother Marsha

No! My precious girl!  (Sobs)

Int. Funeral

Mother Marsha

Thank you for coming.  She thought very highly of Liisa and you, too, Vaino.

Liisa goes to the casket and sobs loudly.

Mother Marsha and Vaino rush to her.

They all hug each other.

Vaino

If you need anything, please let me know?

Mother Marsha

I'm planning on going through her things.  When I get the courage, do you think you and your sister can come and help me?

Vaino

Of course.  Please take care of yourself and remember it's okay to grieve.

Weeks Later

Mother Marsha

Thanks for coming to help me with this, Vaino.  Where is Liisa today?

Vaino

Oh, she enrolled in new classes.

Mother Marsha

Butterfly would have been very proud of her.

(Mother Marsha breaks down, and Vaino hugs her)

Butterfly in ghost form

Keep playing for me, Vaino.  (Kisses his cheek)

Int. Liisa is at Butterfly's graveside.

Liisa

Hi, Butterfly.  Yeah, that's right. I talk a lot more now.  Vaino says it's hard to shut me up now. I miss you.  If  I hadn't been so scared, we would have been good friends! Why? Life isn't fair, isn't it?  I hope you're proud of me up there, Butterfly.
