“I think I'm going to be sick.”
Mr. Jenkins caught her. “I think we should get you home. Are you going to be okay?”
“I- I don't know.”
"Come on. You can have tea with me. Are you okay with that?"
Sophie nodded. “I'm going away for a long time, aren't we?”
“No. I'm going to make sure of that.”
Six months later.
Sophie got off on self-defense. She and Mr. Jenkins have become closer. He took her under his wing and even started to refer to her as his daughter. She even hired him at the bakery.
"A dozen, please. "
“Coming right up. Oh, and since it's Easter., You get a chocolate bunny for free to..”
“Well, it seems that was our last customer of the day. “
"You go on. I'll close up.
Sophie smiled. Her life had turned out so differently. If she hadn't met Mr. Jenkins, she probably wouldn't be standing here today. He even came around to liking her dog and taking the dog for walks. Sometimes, though, she still thought about Lila. She wondered if she had just gotten her help if she'd still be around. If maybe she wouldn't have tried to do what she did.
Sophie shook those thoughts away and closed up. Nighttime was still creepy to her, and sometimes she didn't like to be alone, but she was working through it with her therapist. No matter where life took her, she knew she would be okay.
