Not So Judgmental

Introduction

October 20, 2005

Silver Gates has just given birth to her first and possibly only child, but when the doctors rush her baby away, that's when she realizes something's wrong.

Silver

What's wrong?  Where are you taking my baby? Charles, what's going on?

Doctor Maze

Mrs. Gates, if you'll just calm down, I'll explain.  First, let me start by saying congratulations on the birth of your daughter. However, there is something you should know.  Nurse, bring the mother her baby, please?

The nurse puts a baby in Silver's arm

Charles

What happened to her arm? What did you do?

Doctor Maze

Mr. Gates, I know you're upset, but please calm down. I can assure you I had nothing to do with your daughter's unfortunate injury.  If I may be so blunt?  Your daughter is going to have multiple surgeries to correct this. Perhaps she'd be better with a family  that is  financially stable?   Just think about it. You two have still options,

Silver

Options? How dare you?! And the only place my daughter is better off is with me and her dad!

Doctor Maze

If I overstepped-

Silver

If? Doctor Maze, you crossed a line!

Charles

We'd like a new doctor.

Doctor Maze

Very well. That can be arranged. Again, I apologize for overstepping.

Silver

The nerve of that guy!

Charles

None of that matters now. All that matter is that we have our beautiful little girl. What do you think of the name Jania? It means God is gracious.

Three weeks later

Silver

You're late!  Where were you?

Charles

I told you I had to work late. Oh my God. You don't believe me, do you? You know what I'm getting sick and tired of this.  I'm divorcing you.  (drops papers)

Silver

All because of a little argument?

Charles

You just don't get it, do you? It's not just those little arguments, Silver. You don't trust me anymore and I don't want to be  in a  marriage that's full of mistrust.

Charles

I'll always be here for Jania! Goodbye, Silver.  (Charles slams the door behind him)

Silver sinks to the floor sobbing

The sound of Jania crying snaps her back to reality

Silver picks up Jania

Silver

Are you hungry? Yeah, mama is too.  It looks like from now on, it's just going to be the two of us.  I'm going to do my best to be the  best mother ever. I'll raise you to be strong and confident.  I'm not saying you won't have any troubles because you will, but I'll be here to help you overcome them.

p>Silver sings</p>

It's not a lie

One day you'll fly

I'll be so proud

You'll wow the crowd

Chase your dreams

Though impossible it seems

It's not a lie

One day you'll fly

I'll be so proud

While watching you wow the crowd

Chase your dreams

No matter how impossible it seems

It's not lie

One day you'll fly

And I'll be so proud

While watching you wow the crowd!

Act One Scene One

August 27th, 2019

Silver

Jania! Get down here! You don't want to be late for your first day of high school, do you?

Jania runs downstairs

Jania

I don't want to go at all. They're going to take one look at me, and think I'm a freak!  I wouldn't blame them  either because that's what I am.

Silver

(Lifts Jania's chin)

You are not a freak. Those people are going to see what a beautiful heart you have!

Jania

No offense, Mom, but you sound like one of those corny parents in one of those cheesy sit-com movies.

Silver

Saying no offense doesn't make it not offensive! (smiles)

A bus honks

Jania

That's my cue. Bye, Mom. Love you!

Jania walks through aisle pretending not to notice how everyone scrambles to cover their seats.

Liza

You can sit next to me.  I'm Liza.  (pats seat)

Jania

Jania Gates.

Liza

What a pretty name, but I think I'll call you Nia for short.

Darcy

Awww how sweet. Liza's taken pity on the freak.  Word of warning though. Liza may seem nice, but she 'll betray you in a heartbeat!

Liza

Get out of here, Darcy!  Go look at yourself in the mirror or something.

Jania giggles.

Int. Classroom

Mrs. Waters

Good morning, class.  I'm Mrs. Waters and I'll be your English Lit teacher for the rest of the semester.  We have a new student. Jania? Would you like to come up and introduce yourself to the class?

Jania stands in the center of the classroom.  Everyone gasps as they notice her arm

Classmate#1

Eww, what happened to your arm? Can't it be fixed?

Classmate#2

Does it hurt?

Classmate#3

Looks like Darcy was right. You are a freak.

Jania

I am not a freak. Thank you though. And to answer both of your questions, yes, it can be fixed. I've gone through multiple surgeries to get it corrected.  I was born this way, so, unfortunately, I can't explain why my arm looks the way it does.

Mrs. Water

Does anyone have any other questions for Jania?

Darcy

You say you don't  look like a freak, but you look like one to me. Did you ever stop to think that maybe your doctor did that to your arm on purpose?

Mrs. Waters

Darcy!  You may have a seat now, Miss Gates.  Darcy, to the principal's office.

Darcy

But, I was just-

Mr. Waters points for Darcy to leave

Darcy glares at Jania on the way out

Mrs. Waters

Before we begin, let me remind you that today are the auditions for our fall musical.  Now, let's turn to page 8.  Jania, would you like to read the first short story?

After Jania reads, the bell rings

Mrs. Waters

Homework for tonight? Read pages 9-11

Int. Lunch

Liza waves for Jania to join her and her friends.

Liza

Nia, I'd like you to meet my friends Cody and Gil.

Gil

How do you do? Liza didn't say you were so  beautiful,  I'm Gil by the way and this fine gentlemen right here is Cody.

Cody

Pleased to meet you.

Jania

Likewise!  So, Liza...  I'm thinking about auditioning for the fall musical!

Liza

Oh, what fun. I'll go along for moral support.

Int. Auditons

Mrs. Waters

May I help you, ladies?

Jania

We're here for the auditions!

Mrs. Waters

Perhaps behind the scenes will fit you better?

Jania

No. I want to audition for a role in the play.

Mrs. Waters sits down and motions for Jania to do the same

Mrs. Waters

I don't want to upset you, but I don't think that's a good idea.

Jania

And why not?

Mrs. Waters

I don't know how to say this, but.... people like you aren't the major stars.  Think about it. How many times have you turned on the TV and have seen someone like you in a major role?

Jania

That may be so, but I'm determined to change that outlook. Come on, Liza. Let's get out of here.

Act One Scene Two

Silver

You're home! How was school-

Jania runs past her mom to her room

Silver

(knocks on door)

Jania, what's going on? Let me in. So we can talk.  Were they mean to you today?

Jania

Yes, but that's not why I'm upset.

Silver

Why are you upset then?

Jania sits up

Jania

I wanted to audition for the school play, but Mrs. Waters said it would be a bad idea. She didn't say it outright, but I know it's because of my appearance. She's afraid I'm going to scare people.   Mom, say something! Oh my God. You agree with her, don't you?

Silver

Now, wait.   I agree with her for one reason only.  It's going to to take a toll on you.

Jania

What happened to you telling me to go after my dreams?

Silver

I still want you to do that, but are you sure acting's it for you? You can always be a playwright!

Jania

I don't want to be a playwright, Mother! I want to be an actress. I won't know if I can do it if I don't get a chance to try.

Silver

You are so talented at so many other things. You don't need to be an actress to prove something to someone.

Jania

I need to prove it to myself!

Silver

I forbid you to even go back to those auditions!

Jania screams at her mom to get out of her room

Int. Ice cream shop

Liza

So your mom forbade you from auditioning? She can't do that! What if I went back with you to talk to her?

Jania

I appreciate that, but I don't think it'll help any.  I'm going back there.  I know I'll get in trouble for going behind my mom's back, but she just doesn't get it.  I need to do this for myself.  I know the audience will be shocked at my appearance. It's a risk I'm willing to take. Just because I look different doesn't mean I'm not talented.

Liza

I support you 100 percent!

Int. Auditions again

Mrs. Waters

You don't give up, do you?

Jania

I'm determined to prove you wrong. Just give me one chance.

Liza

If you don't, I have proof that you're discriminating against Jania.  (presses play on her voice recorder)

Mrs. Waters

Wow. Bravo. You were smart enough to record me, but are you brave enough to take action, Miss Goldstein?

Liza

Continue messing with my friend and you'll find out. Now I'm going to Principal Owen's office with this.

Mrs. Waters

Fine! She can audition, but I can't guarantee that she'll  get a part.

Jania

Thank you so much! You won't regret this.

Mrs. Waters rolls her eyes

Mrs. Waters

Yeah, yeah just read Ivory's line, will ya?

Jania reading line:

I trusted you! This is how you repay me by betraying me?

Mrs. Waters dismisses Jania after a few more lines are read

Act One Scene Three

Liza runs over to Jania

Jania

I didn't get the part!

Liza

There's always the spring musical.

Jania

Yeah, I guess so.

Mrs. Waters

Good morning, girls.

Darcy

I got the part of Ivory!

Liza to Mrs. Waters

Liza

Playing favoritism, are we?

Mrs. Waters

I know you two are upset but believe it or not...  Jania just doesn't fit into this cast.  Perhaps in the spring musical, she will?

Jania runs out the door. Liza glares at  Mrs. Waters before rushing after her friend

Liza

Jania, wait! Jania! Maybe this is a good thing.

Jania

How can this be a good thing?

Liza

Well, for starters.. you won't have to tell your mom that you  went behind her back.  Second, this can motivate you for the spring musical.

Jania

I can't believe it. You're right. This is a blessing in disguise. I'm going to stand up to my mom.  I'm going to march in there and tell her that  I'm auditioning to be in the spring musical no matter what. There's only one thing I need  my best friend for support.

Liza

And that you shall have.

Silver

How was school today-

Jania

Mom, this is my friend, Liza.

Silver

Hello, Liza. Would you like to stay for dinner?

Liza

I'd love to. I'll just need to call my mom to let her know.  (Liza exits)

Silver

I have something to tell you.  I invited your father to your birthday celebration in October.

Jania

What? How could you invite him back into our lives? He abandoned us!  He left because he didn't want to have a freak for a daughter!

Silver

That's not why he left!

Jania

Why are you defending him?!

Silver

Why are you being so difficult?

Jania

Since we're being honest, I auditioned for the school play!

Silver

Jania! Even after I asked you not to!

Jania

You didn't ask me not. You forbade me, but if it makes you feel any better, I didn't get the part.  Don't look at me like that.   You can't protect me from bullies forever, Mother. I need to learn how to stand up for myself. That's what I'm going to do by auditioning for the spring musical. I'm asking nicely please don't try to stop me.

Silver

I guess if that's what you want to do, then I have no choice, but to respect that.

Jania and Silver

It's not a lie

One day you'll fly

I'll wow the crowd

Act One Scene Four

Int. Dinner table

Liza

This is delicious, Mrs. Gates. I can't remember the last time I had a home-cooked meal.

Jania

Doesn't your family sit down for dinner?

Liza

Not anymore. We haven't done that since my brother, Jay left for college.

Silver

How tragic. Tell you what. You're welcome here anytime for dinner.

Liza

Thanks, Mrs. Gates. Oh, look at the time! I have to get home.

Silver

Liza seems nice.

Jania

She is, but that's not what I want to talk to you about.

Silver

Are we going back to this spring musical thing? I already told him you, I accept it.

Jania

That's just it, Mom. I don't think you do. I need you to mean it!

Silver

I do mean it. I'm just worried about you.  What happened at your school isn't the first time that will happen.  People don't understand what it's like to be different, so they think it's okay to be mean.

Jania

I know. I'm well aware, but I'm also well aware that there's good people out there like Liza.  You have to believe that, too, Mom.

Silver

Maybe I'll get there one day.

Jania

You can't live the rest of your life in fear that someone is going to break your heart again.

Silver

You're right. How did you ever get so smart?  (kisses the top of Jania's head)

Int.  Jania sits outside

Gil wheels himself up to her

Jania

Gil, what are you doing here?

Gil

Liza told me everything. You are the bravest women I've ever met, Jania Gates.  I came here to say that to you, but I also came here to ask you on a date.

Jania

A date?  I'd love that!

Gil

Great!

(Jania bends down to kiss Gil on the cheek)

Gil wheels himself away

Silver opens the door

Silver

It's getting late.  Who were you talking to?

Jania

Just this boy from school. He asked me on a date!

Little did Jania and Gil know that Darcy was watching them

Darcy confronts Gil

Gil

Darcy, you scared me!

Darcy

What do you see in Jania?

Gil

Lots of things I don't see in you.  Like inner beauty.

Darcy

Ouch. If I had a heart, that would break it.

Gil

At least you know you're a witch.  (Wheels away from Darcy)

Darcy scoffs

Act Two Scene One

Int. Rehearsals

Mrs. Waters

Darcy! Mess up one more time and I'll give your part to Jania!

Darcy

I'm sorry. I'm trying. I am!

Mrs. Waters

You're not trying hard enough! You don't  want this part bad enough.  Half attempts like Darcy will not be accepted. You're all dismissed for today!

Darcy runs smack dab into Cody

Cody

Darcy?  What's wrong?

Darcy

Nothing that you can help with!

Cody

Hey, at least let me try.

Darcy

Don't you have somewhere to be with your freaky friends?

Cody

What is your problem with my friends?

Darcy

I told you they're freaks.  I have no idea what you and Gil see in them.

Cody

They don't know what I see in you either, but I see something very special.

Darcy rolls her eyes.

Darcy

I have to go!

Cody gently grabs her arm

Darcy

I know your friends think I'm heartless, but I do have a heart.

Cody

I know and I happen to know how big and golden it is.

Int. Darcy's home

Darcy

Did you have to embarrass me today at rehearsals?

Mrs. Waters

Watch your tone, young lady.   As for embarrassing, you do plenty of that for both of us!

Darcy

You're my mother! You're supposed to be on my side. You're supposed to be rooting for me!

Mrs. Waters

What did I say about that tone?

Darcy

You know what? I'm going to apologize to Jania! She can have my part!

Mrs. Waters grabs Darcy's hand to stop her that's when her dad, Charles comes in

Charles

What's going on?

Mrs. Waters

Darcy's going to tell Jania everything!

Charles

Maybe it's best. She is Jania's half-sister after all.

Darcy

What?  I'm related to that freak!

Charles

Don't call your sister that!

Darcy runs out of the house

Mrs. Waters

Good going, Charles. Now look what you've done.

Charles

Brenna, whatever happens, it's for the best.

Brenna

You don't even believe that! This is unbelievable. I'm going after her.

Charles

Brenna, come back!!

Act Two Scene Two

Jania

Darcy, what are you doing here? It's late!

Darcy

I know, but I have to tell you something. Before I do that.  Before I do that, I swear I didn't know. If I had known, I would have never said those mean things about you or to you.

Jania

What are you talking about?

Darcy

We're related, Jania.  We're sisters!

Jania

You're lying! That's impossible!

Darcy

I'm not lying and it's possible.   (Darcy pulls a photo of Charles out of her pocket) That's my dad. Our dad, Charles.

Jania

Mom! Mom!

Silver

What's going on?

Darcy

I didn't mean to upset her. I swear, but she needed to know the truth!

Silver

How dare you come here to upset my daughter! Get off my property, Darcy! Now!

Darcy

Mrs. Gates, she needed to know that we're related.

Silver

Leave now! I'll deal with you and your father later!

Silver and Jania hug

Darcy looks back at them one more time before running to Cody

Cody

I've been looking for you.

Darcy

Boy, am I glad to see you! I need to talk to you.

Cody

You need to talk to me?

Darcy

I found out Jania's my half-sister, so I went there to explain and apologize.

Cody

It backfired on you, didn't it?

Cody

If it's any consolation, I'm proud of you.

Darcy

You are?

Cody

Darcy, I've always known there was a good person deep down.  You just proved it. Hey, don't worry about Jania. She'll come around, I'm sure.

Darcy

I just can't believe my father knew. I can't believe he kept this from us! This whole time Jania and I could have been friends, but instead, I chose to bully her.

Cody

You're making up for it now.

Darcy

That's not the way Jania sees it.

Cody

Sure not right now, but I can assure you that she will see it that way later on.

Darcy

I'm going to let Jania have that role of Ivory. I don't want it, anyway. I promise to not be so judgmental anymore.

(Darcy kisses Cody on the cheek)

Cody rambles on

Darcy smiles

Darcy

Cody, how about you just shut up and kiss me?

Cody

Gladly

They kiss
