"Leigh, can you come out here for a second? I have a surprise for you." My dad calls out to me just as I finish putting on my cowgirl costume.
"Everything okay?" I asked. My dad smiles and motions for me to follow him into the living room.
"First, I need to tell you something. I don't want you to hear from anyone else. Your mom and I are getting a divorce. Please know that none of this is your fault. We both love you very much, but your mom is starting to realize how dangerous she is. It's a step in the right direction.
I know this is hard to hear, but I refused to put my only daughter in danger, no matter how much I love your mom. Do you understand?"
I nod even though all kinds of questions and thoughts are going through my mind. He says it's not my fault, but I can't but feel like it is. "I have something for you." Out of nowhere, he pulls out a newly painted cane.
"It's still Bob. I just fixed him a little more. You need Bob, but he needs you just as much," Dad winks.
I hug him. "Have a good time at the party tonight, okay? Oh and please call me if you feel you're in danger."
"Dad, I promise. It's not a party anyway. It's Just a Halloween get together. Besides, Eleanor will be with me."
At the party, I make my way to Eleanor. Eleanor was wearing a queen costume. "You look so majestic as a queen," I whisper into her ear and she blushes.
“Hello,” a familiar voice says from behind us. We both turn around to come face to face with Moira.
"Moira, go away," Eleanor says through clenched teeth.
“Relax. Just came here to call a truce.”
"Well, I'm sorry if I don't believe you."
"Believe what you want, but I do want to make amends," Moira looks at me. Something about the way she's looking at me creeps me though.
Eleanor must notice because it's when she squeezes my hand.
We try to walk away, but Moira steps in front of us, blocking our exit. Eleanor looks at me. She's trying to be brave for me, but I can see the fear in her face.
Moira pushes Eleanor. Everything is happening so fast. The next thing I know is that I'm locked in a room with Moira.
“Good. Now I've finally got you alone. You and I are going to have some fun.” It wasn't a statement. It was an order.
“No. Let me out of here!” I shout at her. This only seems to aggravate her. She pulls my hair, forcing me to look at her.
“Give me your phone.”
“Give me your phone!” Moira growls again.
After caving in, she throws my phone, smashing it.
"I'll be back. Don't go anywhere," Moira smiles, locking me in and leaving me completely in the dark.
I must have been sitting in the dark for three hours or so. I was just about to give up any hope of anyone finding me or rescuing me when I hear a loud noise. Someone is kicking in the door. I know it's not Moira because she has the key.
It's Eleanor. I'm finally free. I run into her arms.
"It's okay. You're safe now. Moira's not here. You're okay."
"You know what the scary thing is, Ellie? I don't think I'll ever know what her true intentions were."
“She's not going to get away with this. I can promise you that.”
Eleanor and I kiss for the longest time. "Leigh, I have to tell you something. I'm in love with you."
