I grinned down at the giant red A that was splashed across my paper. I know what you're thinking. You must be thinking "But, Ruby, don't you get straight A's all the time?" I'm sad to say, my friends, that's not the case at all.
It's not like I don't try. I just have a hard time focusing on things I find boring. You see, this class? It was my writing class and writing is my passion. Before I could make my escape from the classroom, my instructor called me back. "
Is there a problem, Instructor Bradford?" I asked. The instructor smiled at me.
"Not at the moment, no, but I just wanted to congratulate you on your A, Your hard work is starting to show and pay off. I also wanted to tell you that I think you're a very talented writer. So, I wanted to give you this."
I reached out and took the flier from her hand. It was about a writing contest. Doubt was starting to creep in my mind.
"I see the doubt starting to form, but I think you have what it takes, Ruby," and with that Instructor Bradford dismissed me.
Just as I was walking home from class, I felt something hard. I put on my gloves and picked it up. It was a ruby gem.
Inside the gem, I saw a note trapped inside of it.I wasn't sure how I was going to get that note out of there, but there's one thing I knew for sure that I was going to try damn hard to do so. I ran back home as fast as I could to get started on my project.
I tapped it a few times, but nothing happened. Frustrated, I set the gem aside and went to go to do chores.
"Hi, honey. How was class today?"
My mom smiled. My mom and I have our ups and downs and we're pretty close. I'm not an only child. I have a sister named, Gemma. My mom loved jewel names so that's how and why she picked our names,
Jewel names. That was it. I gasped. My mom gave me a strange glance, but I shrugged and just went back to washing the dishes.
After washing the dishes, I rushed back upstairs to see if my theory worked. I held the jewel up and spoke to it., "Jewel names." I was shocked when it flew open, freeing the letter for me to read. I took the note out and read it.
You don't know me, but you've heard of me. I've decided to reassemble a new power team, but after many years, the rules have now changed. Your first test was to figure out how to open this gem, and that you did.
Now, on to the next level. You need to be prepared and what better way to be equipped than to fight? During this level, you will meet the three others. Your, sister, Gemma, Amethyst and Jasper. You four will all learn how to work together as a team. The mission starts now! Good luck!
I left a note for my mom and stepped out into the cool air. I took a deep breath and jogged to the tree. There, my sister Gemma was waiting with her hands on her hips.
"Took you long enough!" Gemma shouted. I just rolled my eyes.
"Should we wait for the other two?" I asked. Gemma nodded. We sat down on logs to wait for them. It didn't take them long at all to get there
"So I guess? Now the next step is to look for another clue?" Everyone ran off in different directions to find another note.
I stopped when I saw a note sticking out of a bush. I called everyone together around and read it aloud.
Congratulations! Whoever found this note is now the leader of the Quad Squad. I promise we'll think of a better name soon. Stay tuned, because you're all in for a bumpy ride.
Gemma and I exchanged looks. I could tell that we were both terrified and excited by all of the possibilities.
