Heart of a Cane: Pilot Episode

Pilot

Narrator

My name is Leigh and I have a bad knee. No, I am not a poet. I just like to rhyme.  My dad says that's a waste of time. Come along with me and my life, you shall see/

Int. Doctor's office.

Nurse

Leigh Harper? Follow me, please.

Luke

How's the knee locking, doc?

Doctor

I'm sorry, Leigh, but it looks like you won't be playing basketball anytime soon. Your knee still hasn't healed. I suggest a means of walking support like a cane.

Leigh

A cane? A cane, Mom! I'm going to be the laughing stock of the school.

Lindsay

No, you won't be.  Be my brave little girl, okay?

Leigh

Fine.

At School

Someone pushes Leigh and Ella helps her up

Leigh tries to put the cane in her locker

Eleanor

What are you doing? Don't you need that?

Leigh

Are you missing what just happened here?  I just got knocked down! I knew I would be the laughing stock of the school!

Eleanor

Leigh, if you keep letting these people get to you, you're never going to be strong enough to stand on your own.  That isn't the Leigh I know!

Leigh

The Leigh you know is a fraud!

Luke

Hey, sweetheart! Great news! I found a knee specialist for you! He's going to help get your knee back in shape, so you can play basketball again. Isn't that excited?  Hey, where's your cane?

Leigh

Yeah, exciting! And I left it a school. I told you I would be the laughing stock of the school and I was!

Luke gives Leigh a look

Eleanor knocks on the door

Eleanor

I think it would be a good idea for you and Bob to bond, Leigh.

Leigh

He's an object, Ellie!

Eleanor

Still. It can't be that bad. Come on, you've had a bad day. Things are going to get better. Now I'll see you at school tomorrow and you better have the cane with you.

Leigh

Yes, Mother.

Leigh puts the cane in the closet

Bob

Hey Sweet Cheeks... How about you let me out of this suffocating closet?

Leigh

Nope. Not happening. This is not happening!  You've got to go back in the closet, Bob! I don't need you anymore.

Bob

Wrong! You still need me. You can try to get rid me all of you want, but I'm just going to show back up!

Leigh

This is insane! You're an inanimate object!  You should not be talking to me. I'm just tired!  I'm going to take a nap and when I wake up, you better be gone!

Bob shakes Leigh awake

Bob

Wake up! Time to rise and shine! It's time for school.  I put all of your homework assignments in your bag and oh by the way. I've spruced up your poetry assignment. It was good but just needed some editing.

Someone grabs Leigh

Bob slips out of her hand puts himself in the floor

Kid trips

Principal

Miss Harper! My office now!

Leigh

I promise Principal Barker, it won't happen again!

Principal

It better not! I'm feeling very generous today, so I'll let you off with a warning. However, your parents will still be called this incident.

Int. Home

Luke

I heard you had an incident today. I've taught you better than that! Did you trip someone? I taught you to fight meanness with kindness, didn't I?

Leigh

But, Dad? It wasn't me! It was that cane! I swear! You have to believe me! Say you believe me!

Luke

Your imagination is running wild! No more journals and books unless it's for school and until you apologize to your classmate!

Leigh

That's not fair! You can't stop me from writing!

Luke

Oh? Do you think this stuff is good enough to get published? It's not! Stick to basketball!

Leigh runs upstairs crying and throws her journals away

Bob

What-what are you doing?

Leigh

Maybe my dad's right. It's a waste of time, isn't it? All of this. Everything I've poured my heart and soul into.. it's not good enough...

Bob

No, it's great! I've read your work, Leigh. You are so talented and I'm not going to let you give up your dream.

Bob hops off the bed

Leigh

Where are you going?

Bob stands in front of Luke

Bob

If it's quite alright with you, Leigh's Dad, I'd like to talk with you

Luke screams

Luke

She wasn't lying! You do talk!

Luke picks up the baseball bat

Leigh

Dad, I don't want to play basketball anymore! I know how you feel about my writing, but I have faith in my work. Isn't that what matters? I know I'm good enough. I know you don't think I'm talented, but I know I have what it takes.

Luke

Leigh... I was wrong. Your work. It's brilliant. I only said those things because I was jealous. I wanted to be a writer when I was young, too.  I promised myself I'd never do what my mother did to me to my kid, but I broke that promise. Do you think you can forgive me?

Leigh

It's already forgiven.

Bob

My work here is done.  If you need me, just tap me on the head and that's how you'll wake me. Goodbye, Leigh.

Luke

You know, this would make a perfect story.

Leigh and Luke laugh.
